How we got here

How we got here

Two empty chairs at a café table. Anshika and Arjit walk in from either side, sit down across from each other, and lean in to talk.

Two families decided we should meet.

5 March 2026 We talked past the point where either of us had anything left to prove.

Arjit and Anshika at two lit windows across a sleeping city at 2 a.m., laughing at their phones as chat bubbles cross the night sky between them.

Then it was every night, and then it was 2 a.m.

Arjit and Anshika on a café bench as a neon heart reading मोहब्बत ज़िंदाबाद lights up above them.

6 June · 22 August 2026 Cafés, elevators, neon signs. We kept finding reasons.

Arjit and Anshika on a bench beneath a flowering kachnar tree as afternoon turns to dusk and they move close together.

It took a year. Not to fall — to be sure.

A small stone temple at dusk; its carved doors open, golden light spills down the steps and the lamps are lit.

Three acceptances

A sagai is not one ritual. It is three, and each one is a family saying yes.

  1. Tilak तिलक

Anshika’s family marks Arjit’s forehead and receives him as their own son.

  2. Godh Bharai गोद भराई

The women of Arjit’s family fill Anshika’s lap with sweets, cloth and sagun, and receive her as their own daughter.

  3. The rings अँगूठी

And then, having been given to each other by both houses, they choose each other themselves.

The banquet lawn at blue hour; clay diyas along the path light one by one toward the glowing marquee.
